[ARCHIVED] Message from Mayor Wheeler

20th Anniversary of 9/11

This Saturday marks the 20th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attack on the United States. On that day, hijacked planes crashed into the twin towers of the World Trade Center, another was flown into the Pentagon, and Flight 93 ended up crashing into a Pennsylvania field after passengers courageously broke into the cockpit.

In Bremerton, overlooking Port Washington Narrows in Evergreen Rotary Park is a memorial, which includes 9/11 artifacts and bent metal beams from the towers that fell as a result of that act of terrorism. The solemn memorial commemorates the nearly 3,000 lives we lost on that tragic day and the incredible bravery that occurred in the aftermath.

In the days ahead, we will remember the victims, recognize the survivors and families, and honor the rescue and recovery workers. And we will pay tribute to the men and women who have served in the armed forces overseas and at home to protect our country and keep us safe.

We will also remember the resilience of the American spirit in the hours that followed. In response to the attacks, many people from all over the United States did what they could do to help. Volunteers gave blood and collected food and supplies. Individuals came to lend a hand or to provide support to those in need. Many others joined the military to safeguard us from terrorism.

Our residents, and our nation, will recall that bitter day and pay their respects for the lives lost, the sacrifices and the heroism that took place two decades ago. Countless individuals will also give back in a day of service to help and bring hope to others in their communities.

The 9/11 memorial at Evergreen Park serves as a powerful reminder to never forget what happened twenty years ago and stands as an enduring message about the strength and determination of our nation.
