[ARCHIVED] Message from Mayor Wheeler

Mayor Wheeler to Partially Reopen Bremerton Parks on May 5

Walking Paths, Trails Will Be Available for Walking, Jogging, Hiking And Nature Viewing

Mayor Greg Wheeler announced today that parks will be partially reopened beginning next week. Effective Tuesday, May 5, all walking paths and trails in Bremerton parks will be accessible for walking, jogging, hiking and nature viewing.

Individuals are asked to stay on trails and paths and maintain appropriate social distancing. Signs will be posted as reminders to Keep Moving while in parks.

“Getting outside is important for physical and mental health,” said Mayor Wheeler. “Opening up opportunities for certain activities will help provide some stress relief as well as exercise during this time. We are asking people to stay close to their neighborhood park and reminding individuals to Keep Moving to help prevent crowding.”

As part of the partial reopening of parks, other recreational activities and amenities are not resuming at this time:

  • All basketball courts, athletic fields, and tennis courts are closed for use.
  • All parking lots, playgrounds, shelters, and restrooms remain closed.
  • Pick-up sports games, picnics, and other gatherings are not permitted.

Please stay local and avoid driving to a park as parking lots are not available. Restrooms remain closed and individuals will need to plan ahead before they visit.

The easing of restrictions in parks is consistent with Governor Inslee’s announcement to allow some outdoor recreation in the state beginning May 5.

“We will continue to take into account health guidelines and consider a measured and phased-in approach as we move forward,” said Mayor Wheeler.

For questions, please contact Bremerton parks and recreation staff at 360-473-5305 or parks@ci.bremerton.wa.us.

Mayor Wheeler will give an update on the Gold Mountain Golf Club on Friday, May 1.
