Free Car Seat Check

Saturday, August 18, 2018

Bremerton Fire Department and the International Association of Fire Fighters, Local 437, are working to save lives before an emergency occurs by partnering with Safe Kids Kitsap to host a free car seat check. The event is scheduled for Saturday, August 18 from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. at the Kitsap Way fire station, 5005 Kitsap Way, just off of SR 3 in Bremerton. Certified car seat technicians will check child seats while community volunteers and firefighters provide tours of the fire engine and other activities as well as hot dog lunches – thanks to a generous gift from WinCo.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), vehicle crashes are one of the leading causes of death for children between 1 and 13 years old. Properly installed child safety restraint systems can prevent many crash-related injuries, but NHTSA reports that almost 60% of all car seats are installed or adjusted incorrectly. Safe Kids Kitsap, a local branch of the international coalition of individuals and agencies interested in preventing childhood injuries, coordinates seat technicians as well as the 32-hour initial training required for certification. At the August 18 event, certified techs will apply their expertise to help families ensure that the kids in their care are riding as safely as possible.
