Needs & Benefits

Significant speeding conditions exist in school walk zones adjacent to Middle and Elementary schools throughout the City. Results of a 2018 traffic volume and speed study near high use school crossings demonstrated an average of 85% of drivers exceed the reduced school zone posted speed limits by 12MPH (during and outside of school hours). Studies indicate that speed is decreased on average by 10 MPH following installation of speed feedback signs.

The End Result

School zone safety improvements in and around the following schools: Armin Jahr Elementary, Crownhill Elementary, John D. “Bud” Hawk Elementary, Mountain View Middle School, and Naval Ave Elementary. Project includes: speed feedback signs, flashing beacons, and school speed zone signage.
