Kid's Fishing Day
Saturday, April 28, 2018
The Annual Kid's Fishing Day will be held Saturday, April 28, 2018 from 8AM to 1PM at Bremerton's Forestry Division compound located at 4398 West Belfair Valley Road ("Old Belfair Highway") approximately 1/4 mile west of Jarstad Park. Signs will be posted at the entrance gate and parking will be available. This is a free event and open to kids ages 5 to 14. A parent or guardian should accompany kids, but the kids need to do the fishing. There is a limit of four trout per child.
The Kitsap Poggie Club will loan rods, tackle and bait for those who do not have their own (you can bring your own if you prefer) and provide fish cleaning (and bagging) on site. There will be cocoa, coffee, tea and pastries donated by local merchants.
This annual event is hosted by the Kitsap Poggie Club and the City of Bremerton Public Works & Utilities Department. Children are invited to drop a line for rainbow trout donated by the State Department of Fish & Wildlife. Rearing ponds operated by Suquamish Tribal Fisheries will hold about 1,000 trout. The ponds are used the rest of the year to produce coho salmon for release into Puget Sound via Gorst Creek.
The Kitsap Poggie Club has sponsored Kid's Fishing Day at various locations for over 50 years. The Suquamish Tribe, Fish & Wildlife, Poggie Club and the City have cooperated on fishery projects and issues for many years. Notable have been the Gorst Creek restoration project and salmon rearing program that places over 2 million Chinook and coho salmon into local waters each year.
