Gov. Inslee Pauses Safe Start applications until July 28 

Gov. Jay Inslee announced yesterday afternoon that the state has extended the hold on all applications submitted by counties to reopen until at least Tuesday, July 28. Counties that applied under the Safe Start plan will stay in their current phase during that time. Kitsap County, including Bremerton, is currently in Phase 2. 

The Governor indicated rising cases and hospitalizations in Washington state have contributed to putting a hold on county applications to reopen. The initial pause was expected to expire on July 16. 

Kitsap County has seen a growing number of cases over the past several weeks, including recent outbreaks at long-term care facilities. The total positive caseload countywide has increased to 332 as of today versus 235 reported at the end of June. 

“I’m hopeful we can turn our trajectory around. People practicing appropriate measures will be an important factor in making that happen,” said Mayor Wheeler. “The best option to get control of the spread of the virus is to do the right thing, even when no one is watching. With rising cases in Bremerton and within our county, I think residents will take that to heart.”
