Thinking about opening a new business or purchasing an existing one?  Great!

Your first step is to contact us, were here to help!  Our team will guide you through the process based on your business type and location.

CAUTION! Before leasing or purchasing commercial space within the City of Bremerton, it is important to contact the Department of Community Development (DCD) to ensure your type of business is allowed in the building you are considering, as each building has its own constraints and requirements based on its structure and zoning.  DCD reviews the location/space for your intended use and provides a Certificate of Occupancy if applicable codes are met.

Determine Occupancy Requirements

The Bremerton Municipal Code (BMC) requires all businesses operating within city limits to obtain an Occupancy Permit for each location. The DCD reviews the location and its intended use, issuing a Certificate of Occupancy if applicable codes are met. Contact us to discuss any alterations to the space.

Understanding What Influences Occupancy

Several agencies and regulations may influence your occupancy approval. This can include:

  • Bremerton Fire Department
  • Washington State Department of Labor & Industries (L&I)
  • Washington State Liquor and Cannabis Board (LCB)
  • Kitsap County Public Health
  • City Planning Department for Sign permits

Occupancy Permits are applied for through The City of Bremerton Portal. The completed Occupancy Packet is required at application submittal in addition to a floorplan. If your business occupies a suite within a larger building, a floorplan of the entire floor you are located on is required, in addition to your suite specific floorplan.

If you are starting a new business in your home, you will need to apply for a Home-Based Business Permit. Please contact us to talk to a Land Use Planner to assist you with your home business plans.
