Crownhill Elementary School Safe Routes to School

Project Status and Schedule

Massana Construction, the City’s contractor for the project, will begin work on August 2, 2017. Prior to that, Puget Sound Energy and Century Link will be onsite to move their utility poles out of the new sidewalk areas. That work is scheduled for the week of July 24, 2017. In addition, the contractor’s surveyor has already been on site to mark out the project. During the month of August crews will complete stormwater improvements along Marine Drive, install the new sidewalks along Marine Drive, and install the sidewalks along Dora Avenue. The sidewalks are scheduled to be complete before school starts on August 30th, so work on this phase of the project will move very quickly. In September the contractor will finish up some miscellaneous work, such as installing signs, pavement markings, and repaving any road sections disturbed by the sidewalk work. Then the project will be suspended while the Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacon is manufactured. That final element of work will be installed as soon as it is delivered, near the end of 2017 or in early 2018. The anticipated traffic impacts for this project are minor; however, at times, the contractor will have one lane of Marine Drive closed and flaggers will be directing traffic. If you plan to travel via Marine Drive between 7 am and 4 pm, just be aware that you may be briefly delayed by the one way traffic. Also, residents on the north side of Dora Avenue will have additional disruptions as the sidewalks are installed. City staff and the contractor will work with those residents directly as the project gets underway.

Project Overview

The City received a $545,000 federal safe routes to school grant to place sidewalks along Marine Drive from Bertha Avenue to Rocky Point Road, and along Dora Avenue between Marine Drive and Crownhill Elementary. The project will also include the installation of a pedestrian controlled rectangular rapid flashing beacon (or RRFB) at a new crosswalk at Dora Avenue and Marine Drive.
